What Is Self Awareness? A Personal and Practical Guide

We are all becoming someone. But the important question is—do you like the direction you’re headed?

At the heart of personal growth and emotional health lies one key concept: self-awareness. So, what is self awareness, really?

Self-awareness is the ability to reflect on your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and patterns. It’s recognizing not only who you are today, but also who you’re becoming—and deciding if that aligns with your values and goals.

Recently, I’ve noticed a growing number of moments where my wife will smile and say, “That was just like your dad!” Whether it’s the tone of my voice, a particular expression, or a sudden desire to avoid traffic at all costs, I catch glimpses of where I come from.

We all do. It’s human nature—an interwoven blend of genetics, upbringing, and experience.

While some parts of who we are might be inherited or shaped early, the more meaningful question becomes: What are you doing with your self-awareness?

Here are a few reflection questions I ask myself every quarter to check in:

  • How are your relationships?
    Are you prioritizing intimacy, fun, and connection with the people who matter?

  • How is your work?
    Do you feel a sense of purpose? Are you learning and growing?

  • How are you engaging with nature or movement?
    How many times have you done something that nourishes your body or spirit—like training, hiking, or just stepping outside?

  • Based on the above, what’s one thing you’re ready to shift?
    And who can you ask to help hold you accountable?

What is self awareness if not the regular practice of asking better questions and giving yourself honest answers?

You might have different areas of life you want to evaluate, and that’s the beauty of it—self-awareness is flexible, personal, and ongoing. But what it can’t be is passive.

Build in checkpoints. Ask a partner, friend, or therapist to help you reflect. Track your progress and redirect if needed.

The journey of self-awareness isn’t about becoming someone else—it’s about becoming more fully yourself, on purpose.
